Older Americans Month celebrates living out loud
Happy Older Americans Month! We celebrate our older citizens every May, and there’s a lot to celebrate this year.
For many older Americans, getting older means getting a new or second start on interests, goals and dreams. This year’s Older Americans Theme, “Age Out Loud”, speaks to the way older adults are living their lives with boldness, confidence and passion, while redefining perceptions about aging and serving as inspiration to people of all ages.
We have some great national role models for that concept. Barbara Hillary, for example, is a retired nurse from New York who at age 75 became the first African-American woman to set foot on the North and South Poles. Former president George H.W. Bush celebrated his 90th birthday by skydiving. And Betty White, a 95-year-old national treasure, became the oldest person to host “Saturday Night Live.”
As the official Older Americans Month site states, “more than ever before, older Americans are working longer, trying new things, and engaging in their communities. They’re taking charge, striving for wellness, focusing on independence, and advocating for themselves and others.”
That is a perfect description of our residents at Ingleside at King Farm, an Engaged Living, continuing care retirement community. Ingleside at King Farm is home to an exceptional group of people who have been active, engaged citizens all their lives, and they aren’t about to stop now. Some still work, or have started second careers. Others follow their passions for art, music, filmmaking and lifelong learning. Many continue to practice long-held values of service to others through volunteer work inside and outside the community.
Besides stylish apartment homes that enable graceful living, Ingleside at King Farm offers all of the services and amenities that empower residents to create their very best retirement lifestyles. A full calendar of enriching activities includes classes, lectures, discussion groups, spiritual programs, movies, concerts and trips to enjoy cultural attractions and world-class performances. Our fitness center, indoor heated pool and roster of professionally led fitness classes encourage activity that is one of the keys to healthy living. Residents can prepare meals in their well-equipped kitchens, or choose from options that range from elegant dinners in the formal dining room to relaxed meals or snacks in the Bistro or Marketplace Café.
Gardenside, Ingleside at King Farm’s upcoming addition, will add even more options for active, engaged retirement living for people 62 years old and better. Gardenside will offer 125 new independent living residences and a Center for Healthy Living with a creative arts center, classrooms and game rooms, and additional services.
