Lifelong learning conveys physical, mental and social benefits

We’re often asked whether Ingleside at King Farm offers opportunities for lifelong learning. The answer is a resounding yes.

Numerous scientific studies have shown that there are cognitive and physical benefits to continued learning. Nancy Merz Nordstrom, a lifelong learning specialist and author of “Learning Later, Living Greater: The Secret for Making the Most of Your After-50 Years,” says there are also less tangible benefits that can affect all areas of our lives.

Lifelong learning keeps us involved in the world and encourages us to remain active contributors to society, Nordstrom says. Continuing to learn also allows us to make new friends, see all sides of an issue and be more resilient to change.

Most importantly, lifelong learning helps us find meaning in our lives and leads to an enriching life, allowing us to explore abilities and pathways that we have not been able to investigate before or haven’t even realized we possessed.

“Through academic learning, educational adventure travel and our renewed sense of volunteerism, we expand our awareness, embrace self-fulfillment, and truly create an exciting multi-dimensional life,” she says.

That’s why, at Ingleside at King Farm, we promote Intellectual Wellness, one of Six Dimensions of Wellness that we adopted as a model for healthy living. And it’s why we offer numerous opportunities for residents to continue learning throughout their lives.

The residents of this extraordinary continuing care retirement community include people who have had outstanding careers in the top ranks of government, education, the arts and business. They are not people who are content to sit out their retirement years. Keeping their minds stimulated is an important component of the active and engaged retirement life they want.

Right on our beautiful campus, residents can discuss current or classic literature at one of several book clubs and a play reader’s group, or talk about current events at a bi-weekly discussion group. They can learn to play bridge with an expert resident instructor, probe the meaning of religious teachings at a Bible study group or attend a lecture such as the entertaining presentations by Steven Friedman, internationally recognized Broadway musical historian and author. Many events draw upon the expertise within the community: one resident presents art history classes and guided museum visits, and another hosts showings of his and other documentary films. The community also brings in authorities for presentations on topics from politics to arts and culture.

We are fortunate to be located in close proximity to the District of Columbia, where educational, cultural and lifelong learning opportunities abound. Academic institutions in the District support lifelong learning opportunities through adult education offerings and access to college-level classes at local universities. Ingleside at King Farm makes that easy by presenting on-site Osher Lifelong Learning Institute programs from Johns Hopkins University.

A “multi-dimensional life” is what residents find at Ingleside at King Farm. Our Gardenside addition will provide even more opportunities for engaged living and lifelong learning.
