Cynthia’s comprehensive care suite looks and feels like home

If you knew Cynthia before she moved to a comprehensive care suite at Ingleside at King Farm, you’d know that she had a beautiful apartment in the retirement community’s independent living. Walk into her new residence, and you’d think she was still there.

Cynthia, who has lived at Ingleside at King Farm for six years, is a very active person who enjoys her social life and entertaining her friends, says her daughter Lisa. When she decided to move to comprehensive care in April because of a need for continuous oxygen, “she kept talking about getting back to her apartment,” Lisa says. “She missed seeing her things.”

Lisa decided she’d try to create a new space for her mom that would feel like home while still having all of the amenities of a skilled nursing suite. She came up with an ambitious plan to combine two rooms so Cynthia would have a living room where she could visit with her friends, and a separate bedroom.

At some retirement communities, that might not have been possible. But the folks at Ingleside at King Farm not only gave permission, but also helped to accomplish the transformation.

The results are spectacular.

“We created a den with her couch and an easy chair and painted the walls warm, inviting colors,” Lisa says. “We hung chandeliers and pretty light fixtures. She really liked the curtains in her apartment, and we had them modified to fit the new windows.”

Once she realized her mom couldn’t move back to her original apartment, Lisa wanted to get the new place done as quickly as possible.

“The whole thing happened in about 10 days,” she says. “Ingleside was fantastic. They hung the chandeliers, and the maintenance people arranged to have the painting done in one day. They were phenomenal about helping me to get this done quickly.”

When people walk in, “they can’t believe they’re in a skilled nursing suite. It really does feel like her home,” Lisa says.

Now, when Cynthia looks around her dusty-rose-colored living room, she sees her treasured silver tea service and a bookcase filled with the dolls she started collecting when she was a child. Her own favorite artwork adorns the walls, and plants add some greenery to the balcony. When friends come to call, they can enjoy cold drinks from the small refrigerator Lisa had installed. In the evenings, she retires to her warm tan and green bedroom.

“It’s very similar to what I had in my other apartment,” Cynthia says. “I brought everything but my bed and my dining room table.”

Cynthia moved into her new apartment in July. Is she comfortable? “Yes, very much so,” she says. “I have my things, and I have all the help I need—my aides, who are very outstanding, and the great nurses.”

On the comprehensive care floor, Cynthia has access to Ingleside at King Farm’s highly trained, compassionate staff to provide her with assistance whenever she needs it. There are plenty of life enrichment activities, from fitness sessions to church services, and entertainment, so Cynthia can continue her active, engaged lifestyle.

“It’s such a pleasant environment there,” says Lisa. “It’s really made a huge difference in my mom’s mood.”
